In 800 Charlemagne enlarged the hostel at the Muristan in Jerusalem and added a library to it. However Louis of Aquitaine marched the entire army of his kingdom over the Pyrenees and besieged it for two years wintering there from 800 to 801 when it capitulated.
He expanded his kingdom into an empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. Charlemagne died in 814 after having ruled as Emperor for just over thirteen years. His son Louis the Pious succeeded him as Emperor.
