Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.

Douglass wrote several autobiographies eloquently describing his experiences in slavery in his 1845 autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave which became influential in its support for abolition. Without his approval he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the impracticable and small Equal Rights Party ticket.
