In 1947 Josephine Baker married French composer Jo Bouillon. Two of Baker's sons Jean-Claude and Jarry (Jari) grew up to go into business together running the restaurant Chez Josephine on Theatre Row 42nd Street New York which celebrates Baker's life and works. The story revolved around the history of jazz and Baker's career.

Fluent in both English and French Baker became an international musical and political icon. She was given such nicknames as the "Bronze Venus" the "Black Pearl" and the "Créole Goddess".
