Born Oskar Josef Bschließmayer in Vienna Werner spent much of his childhood in the care of his grandmother who entertained him with stories about the Burgtheater the Austrian state theatre where he was accepted at the age of eighteen by Lothar Müthel.
Werner received an Academy Award nomination in 1966 two BAFTA award nominations in 1966 and 1967 and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture in 1966. He is known for his film performances in Jules and Jim (1962) Ship of Fools (1965) The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) Fahrenheit 451 (1966) and The Shoes of the FiOskar Wernerrman (1968).
