Veil was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in the 1979 European election. She was awarded the Grand Cross of the Légion D'Honneur in 2012.

She was elected to the Académie française in November 2008. A survivor from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where Simone Veil lost part of her family Simone Veil is the Honorary President of the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah.
