In 1979 he coached the quarterbacks at Georgia Tech under Pepper Rodgers and worked as an assistant coach and the offensive coordinator at Duke University from 1980 to 1982. In the final game of the 2006 regular season Spurrier led the Gamecocks to victory over in-state rival Clemson at Death Valley. Spurrier's Gamecocks opened the 2006 season with a 15–0 win over Mississippi State in Starkville where he was 0–2 while coaching the Florida Gators.
Stephen Orr Spurrier (born April 20 1945) is an American college football coach and former player. Spurrier was a two-time All-American quarterback for the Gators and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1986. He played professional football for ten seasons during the 1960s and 1970s with the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL).
