According to Geoff Hurst's autobiography England full back George Cohen overheard Ramsey talking to his coaching staff about the possibility of dropping Moore for the final and deploying the more battle-hardened Norman Hunter in his place. His former England team-mate Jack Charlton on a BBC documentary of Moore's life in and outside of football said of Moore's death:

He won a total of 108 caps for the England team which at the time of his international retirement in 1973 was a national record.
