I lost relatives to AIDS, a couple of my closest cousins. I lost friends to AIDS, high-school friends who never even made it to their 21st birthdays in the '80s. When it's that close to you, you can't really deny it, and you can't run from it.

Early career (1991–2001)
From 1993–1998 Latifah had a starring role on Living Single a Fox sitcom which gained high ratings among black audiences; Queen Latifah also wrote and performed its theme music. She also hosted the 2010 People's Choice Awards.

Her work in music film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination.
