In 1588 he became MP for Liverpool and then for Middlesex in 1593. For the next three years he visited Blois Poitiers Tours Italy and Spain. For two years he worked quietly at Gray's Inn until he was admitted as an outer barrister in 1582.

Although his political career ended in disgrace he remained extremely influential through his works especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution. He famously died by contracting pneumonia while studying the effects of freezing on the preservation of meat bringing him into a rare historical group of scientists who were killed by their own experiments.
