I don't look at the work of my contemporaries very much; I tend to look at pictures by dead artists. It's much easier to get near their paintings.

Early life
Hodgkin a cousin of the English still life painter Eliot Hodgkin (1905–87) was educated at Eton College and then at Bryanston School in Dorset.
