Thomas Chalmers

He first addressed himself to providing schools for the children. Chalmers was a Malthusian in his belief that the cause of pauperism was the poor having too many children. The Church then appealed to the government for relief.

He has been called "Scotland's greatest nineteenth-century churchman".
