The assassin Nathuram Godse was a Hindu nationalist with links to the extremist Hindu Mahasabha who held Gandhi guilty of favouring Pakistan and strongly opposed the doctrine of nonviolence. In 1885 when Gandhi was 15 the couple's first child was born but survived only a few days.
