Early life

Curtin was born in Creswick in central Victoria. Curtin died in 1945 and was succeeded by Ben Chifley who retained government at the 1946 election with over 54 percent of the two-party vote and a continued Senate majority. Early political career

Curtin got up as the Labor candidate for the federal seat of Fremantle near Perth in 1925 losing badly to the incumbent independent William Watson.

John Joseph Curtin (8 January 1885 – 5 July 1945) Australian politician served as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia. Curtin died in 1945 and was succeeded by Ben Chifley who retained government at the 1946 election with over 54 percent of the two-party vote and a continued Senate majority. His Prime Ministerial predecessor and 1943 election Coalition leader Arthur Fadden of the Country Party wrote: "I do not care who knows it but in my opinion there was no greater figure in Australian public life in my lifetime than Curtin.
