Greene was born Heinz Grünhaus in Frankfurt Germany and when he was 20 his family fled the Nazi regime to Belgium Vichy France Portugal and finally the United States in 1943 during World War II. Superior Court from 1971 to 1978. C.

He was nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
