However Jackson did not recognize their actions and on August 5 issued a proclamation declaring Missouri a free republic and dissolving all ties with the Union. Jackson was first elected to the Missouri General Assembly in 1836 representing Saline County. However on December 6 1862 Jackson died from stomach cancer at age 56 in a Little Rock rooming house.

He was the 15th Governor of Missouri in 1861 then governor-in-exile for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
