Familism named for a 16th-century sect called the Family of Love involved one's perfect union with God under the Holy Spirit coupled with freedom both from sin and from the responsibility for it. He was an officer in the colonial militia and died from wounds received during King Philip's War. 2.

This was followed by a March 1638 church trial in which Anne Hutchinson was excommunicated. After her husband's death a few years later threats of Massachusetts taking over Rhode Island compelled Hutchinson to move totally outside the reach of Boston into the lands of the Dutch. She is honoured by Massachusetts with a State House monument calling her a "courageous exponent of civil liberty and religious toleration.
